The film was shot in New Zealand, not the Pacific Northwest. No one has believed the stories he's told for years about a fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods. He claims he's been helped by a dragon named Elliot. He's discovered by a forest ranger (Howard) after living in the Pacific Northwest woods for six years. Oakes plays Pete, a 10-year-old boy whose parents were killed in a car accident. His film "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" was in the running for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and was shown at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The director, Lowery, has independent film credentials. The dragon is more realistic thanks to computer-generated imagery. The 2016 "Pete's Dragon" retains a bit of the storyline but is a very different take.

Reviews were mixed, with the New York Times writing, "You don't often see children's musicals as ambitious as this one any more," with another critic calling it "a horrid assault on the senses." The original 1977 "Pete's Dragon" was a rather goofy film, mixing songs, major actors including Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons and Shelley Winters, lots of drinking, live action and an animated bright green dragon with purple hair. Agents, directors and such know when a kid just has 'it.'" "Believe me, if a kid wasn't behaved on a set - or even the parents - there wouldn't be job after job.

"And even as a kid, work ethic comes into play," said Miller, who today makes a living by voicing animated characters for children's TV shows. So is the support from parents and "talent and training and fortitude to go with it all." Miller, who before "Gimme a Break!" made her Broadway debut alongside Dick Van Dyke, agreed that being "in the right place at the right time" is important.
